King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has recently unveiled the UKโs first outdoor Critical Care Garden, a pioneering rooftop space designed to transform the recovery experience for its 60-bed critical care unit.
SSG has played a vital role in bringing this vision to life by delivering a bespoke design of our Bedhead Services Trunking, expertly integrated into six purpose-built, waterproof medical cabinets. Each cabinet seamlessly houses our ๐๐๐น๐น ๐๐ฃ ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ก๐๐ฟ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐น ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ, medical gas supplies and fully connected data and electrical systems. This ensures patients receive the same high-level care outdoors as they do within the main unit.

Traditionally, Hospital gardens have been available, as exposure to fresh air and nature can boost patient wellbeing and reduce time spent in hospital, but they have lacked the ability to house the most critically ill patients and their needs. For the first time, even the most critically ill patients can safely access these benefits, opening up new possibilities in patient-centred care.
As Dr Phil Hopkins, Intensive Care Consultant at Kingโs, explains:

Developed over three years in collaboration with WSP and Kingโs College Hospital, this landmark project represents a bold step forward in critical care design. Weโre proud to have contributed to a solution that combines safety, connectivity and innovation.
