My tutor at college encouraged me to consider an apprenticeship, he told me they were a good path to tread. I took his advice and was interviewed by two good companies. These were my first ever interviews and I was delighted to be offered apprenticeships with both. One of these was Static Systems Group. I liked the company from the off and they offered me a good package both financially and structurally. They just seemed right for me so I joined them.
I was supported through the process by Mercia Management’s Paul Howcroft, who, with his training experience was there when I needed him. He really helped me.
During my three years as an apprentice I experienced virtually every department in the company, starting on the shop floor where I got to understand how the equipment was manufactured.
After six months on the shop floor I was able to branch out and gain experience in CAD (Computer Aided Design) and many other areas including sales, where I felt particularly at home.
Having completed my apprenticeship I successfully applied for a job in our external sales team. Day to day, I travel around my region meeting potential customers to discuss their needs and how we can provide products that suit their requirements
My apprenticeship was vital in giving me the tools to carry out my current role and to be an effective sales person. For instance, it’s key that you know how to install and maintain the systems.
I think the most enjoyable aspects of my job include meeting people and building my own network of clients.
Also gratifying is the ability to use my product knowledge to tailor a system precisely to my customers’ needs.
Throughout my apprenticeship and beyond, Static Systems has provided excellent resources including professional sales training.
