Static Systems Group has completed a major contract to integrate state-of-the-art voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and wireless (WiFi) technology into its Codemlon nurse call system.
The company has provided Pok Oi Hospital in Hong Kong with over 40, networked nurse call systems serving 622 beds in busy, medical and surgical wards. Also included in the ‘total package’ contract are Static Systems’ bedhead services trunking and paging systems for use in some of the non-critical areas.
The technology routes patient and emergency calls through to VoIP handsets carried by medical staff. In effect, the staff handset becomes a mobile nurse station indicator, allowing a quick and direct response to the patient, without having to return to the nurse base.
The staff handsets will continue to display calls until there has been a response to the call by a team member. Information on the handset and at the nurse station identifies exactly which patient is calling.
“We are seeing a growing interest for applications such as this as the potential for improved patient care and nursing efficiencies is realised through increased functionality of nurse call systems”, comments Static Systems’ Sales Director, Phil Wade.
“And our experience overseas means we are particularly well placed to advice hospitals in their evaluation of the benefits and suitability of installing a VoIP system”.
Recognising the particular requirements of different hospitals, each nurse call / VoIP installation is tailored to suit specific nurse management protocols and procedures.
There are many operational features that can be employed. In ‘quiet’ wards, for instance, a vibrate option on the nurse’s handset can be activated. Handsets can also be connected to the hospital switchboard to provide the functionality of a conventional telephone with high quality speech.
VoIP communication is only one of many advanced site inter-connectivity options available with the company’s IP Fusion product which has been introduced to collate site-wide alarms such as fire, cardiac and security into one central system.
